Biography
Shivaji Rao Gaekwad is an Indian film actor, producer, screenplay writer and also philanthropist. He is popularly known by his stage name Rajinikanth. He works primarily in Tamil cinema. He has received several accolades, including six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, four Best Actor Awards and two Special Awards for Best Actor. He is honored by Government of India with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016.Rajinikanth was born on 12 December 1950, in Bangalore, Mysore State (now Karnataka), India to Ramoji Rao Gaekwad and Jijabai. His father was a police constable and mother was a housewife. He has two elder brothers named Nageshwara Rao Gaikwad and Sathyanarayana Rao Gaikwad and a sister named Aswath Balubhai. When he was nine years old, he lost his mother. He did his primary education at Gavipuram Government Kannada Model Primary School. He did his schooling at the Acharya Paathshala in Basavanagudi, Bangalore and then at the Vivekananda Balaka Sangha.
Rajinikanth made his film debut in 1975 with the Tamil movie Apoorva Raagangal, directed by K. Balachander, in which he played a minor role. He had his first major role in Telugu drama film Anthuleni Katha in 1976. He got his breakthrough in Tamil cinema with the movie Moondru Mudichu in 1976. He made his Bollywood debut in 1983 with the movie Andha Kanoon, directed by Tatineni Rama Rao. He has acted many commercial successful Tamil movies such as Mullum Malarum, Moondru Mugam, Nallavanuku Nallavan, Muthu, Padayappa, Chandramukhi, Sivaji, Enthiran etc.
Rajinikanth married on 26 February 1981 to Latha Rangachari, a student of Ethiraj College for Women in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The couple has two daughters named Aishwarya Rajinikanth and Soundarya Rajinikanth.
