Catherine Elise Blanchett is an Australian actress and theatre director who is popularly known as Cate Blanchett. She is mainly appeared in film and stage. She has received many award and accolades, including two Academy Awards, six AACTA Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, three British Academy Film Awards, three BAFTA Awards, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards.Cate Blanchett was born on 14 May 1969 in Ivanhoe, Melbourne, Australia to American father, Robert Blanchett and Australian mother, June Blanchett. Her father was a United States Navy petty officer (Later worked as an advertising executive) and mother worked as a property developer and teacher. She has an elder brother, Bob Blanchett, a computer systems engineer and a younger sister, Genevieve Blanchett, a theatrical designer. She completed her primary education from Ivanhoe East Primary School in Melbourne. She studied at Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School for her secondary education. Later, she attended at Methodist Ladies' College and then University of Melbourne. She then enrolled in the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) to pursue an acting career.
Cate Blanchett made her stage debut by playing Electra in 1992. Her first major stage role was Oleanna play by David Mamet in 1992, opposite Geoffrey Rush. The next year, she performs in Timothy Daly's Kafka Dances, for which she won the Sydney Theatre Critics' Best Newcomer Award. The same year, she was awarded the Best Actress Award for her performance in Mamet's Oleanna. She made her television debut in 1994 with miniseries Heartland opposite Ernie Dingo. Then she appeared in the miniseries Bordertown (1995) with Hugo Weaving.
Cate Blanchett made her feature film debut in 1997 with the World War II drama Paradise Road as a supporting role alongside Glenn Close and Frances McDormand. The same year, she acted as a leading role in the romantic drama Oscar and Lucinda, directed by Gillian Armstrong which earned her first AFI Award nomination as Best Leading Actress. Later, she appeared in the romantic comedy film Thank God He Met Lizzie (1997) opposite Richard Roxburgh and Frances O'Connor, for which she won the AFI Best Actress Award. In 1998, she acted in the critically acclaimed film Elizabeth, directed by Shekhar Kapur, which was her first high-profile international role. She received worldwide attention for her performance and earning her the Golden Globe Award and British Academy Award (BAFTA), and her first Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Cate Blanchett married to Andrew Upton, a playwright and screenwriter on 29 December 1997. The couple has three sons, Dashiell John (b. December 2001), Roman Robert (b. April 2004), Ignatius Martin (b. April 2008) and an adopted daughter, Edith Vivian Patricia Upton.
