Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio is an American actor, film producer, and environmental activist. He was born on November 11, 1974 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States to George DiCaprio and Irmelin Indenbirken. His father is an underground comix artist and producer and distributor of comic books and his mother is a legal secretary. His parents separated when he was a year old, and he lived mostly with his mother. He spent a part of his childhood years with his maternal grandparents in Germany. He attended Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies for four years, after which he joined the Seeds Elementary School. He joined the John Marshall High School which he eventually left after three years and ended up attaining only a general equivalency diploma (GED).Leonardo DiCaprio started his career by appearing in television commercials. He appeared on the shows The New Lassie (1989) and Santa Barbara (1990) and also had long running roles in the comedy-drama Parenthood (1990) and the sitcom Growing Pains (1991). He made his film debut in 1991 with the movie Critters 3, directed by Kristine Peterson. Two years later, he starred in the film adaptation of the memoir This Boy's Life (1993). He then acted as a supporting role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He gained public recognition with leading roles in The Basketball Diaries (1995), romantic drama Romeo + Juliet (1996), and the epic romance Titanic (1997). Titanic became the highest-grossing film of all time until Cameron's science fiction film Avatar (2009) overtook it.
